ChatGPT: A Think Tank For The Church

It’s a think tank! That’s exactly how it should be used. While some are still debating whether or not ChatGPT or AI driven tools have a place in our churches, others are using it to take their organizations and ministries to the next level. AI can help you save time, implement better ideas, and be impactful. So why don’t churches use it more?

I consider AI tools, in particular tools like ChatGPT and Gemini (Google’s version of ChatGPT) to be indispensable think tanks. Whenever I am creatively challenged or have run out of content and design ideas for our church, I turn to AI. Some people assume that using an AI chatbot like ChatGPT equates to stealing or letting the AI do all the work for you. While some may use it that way, I believe in using ChatGPT in ways that are ethical and that promote creativity.

Back in the day, we would gather a small group of people to create a “think tank” for ideas on ways to elevate our ministries. Today, you can enter information about your ministry and its mission into ChatGPT and in seconds it can generate ideas, plans, outlines, and next steps for you to enhance the work you’re already doing.

Here are a few ways you can use ChatGPT as a Think Tank:

Brainstorming for Social Media & More

  1. Generate social media captions and narratives for your post.

  2. Strategize: Outline a month’s worth of content for social media.

  3. Brainstorm ideas for live events and services designed to reach your target audience.

Administrative Support

  1. Draft policies and training manuals that align with your mission.

  2. Draft and send professional emails and e-blast.

  3. Draft sermon & devotional summaries from Sunday’s service.

Technical and Media Support

  1. Input your ‘How To’ questions. (e.g. How do I connect a Sony camera to Blackmagic Design Switcher?) This one is a game changer…trust me!

  2. Get advice on how to optimize your website for greater impact. (type in your website URL and be amazed!)

  3. Get detailed feedback on your graphics and digital content. (Upload your graphics for feedback on design, font, background etc.)

Discipleship

  1. Generate online module ideas for discipleship development.

  2. Compile ideas for Facebook groups, Tiktok videos, etc. that promote online evangelism and discipleship.

I often emphasize that AI is designed to assist humans, not replace them. ChatGPT is a valuable tool for creativity and brainstorming, but it isn’t human. It can sometimes provide misleading information or unexpected results (though, to be fair, so can people 😉). Like anything else on the internet, it should be used with wisdom and responsibility. And we dare not implement things for God without consulting God. Praying over the ideas generated by ChapGPT will help us to ground our creativity in the work and will of God.
